Erwin E. Groenendal, age 89, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Groenendal; son, Steven (Daphne) Groenendal; grandchildren, Valerie (Frank) Palumbo, Sarah (Bryan) Chalekian, Nicholas Rees; great grandchildren, Lorenzo Palumbo, Nolan Chalekian, Lia Hawkins, Jaelyn Berger, Izabella Palumbo, Desiree Quinn, and Josephine Chalekian, his beloved dog, Molly.

Preceded in death by his son, David Groenendal; daughter, Deborah (Donald) Buffa; granddaughter, Crystal Groenendal; parents, Matthew (Lillian) Groenendal and all his siblings.

Erwin was born and raised in cicero, Il. He attended St. Valentine Grade School and St. Mel High School. Erwin retired from Rexam after working for them for 36 years. Though Erwin is no longer with us, the love he shared and the memories he created will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He may have departed from this world, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorial Service for Erwin will be held at Farkas Funeral home, 3201 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 12:00 pm. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until time of service.
