Obituary

Ethel Josephine Villachua Abelido, beloved mother, wife, educator, and humanitarian, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, in Joliet, IL, at the age of 79. Born on May 16, 1946, in Catabalogan, Philippines, Ethel's life was a testament to her faith-filled spirit, her generous heart, and her friendly demeanor that touched the lives of everyone she met.

Ethel was the cherished wife of the late Herman Abelido and the loving mother of the late Charlie Abelido. Her memory will be held dear by her surviving children, Theresa Abelido and Shane Abelido, who continue to embody the values and love she instilled in them.

After graduating from Samar College with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Ethel dedicated her life to nurturing young minds. Her passion for teaching was only rivaled by her commitment to service. Her commitment to education was just the beginning of her life's work of service to others.

In her professional life, Ethel was deeply involved with the Philippine National Red Cross. She was a pivotal member of their Executive Development Program, honed her skills in disaster relief training, and became a certified First Aid and swimming instructor. Ethel's work was not just a job; it was a calling. She dedicated herself to helping those in need, often putting the welfare of others before her own. Through her work with the Philippine National Red Cross, Ethel was a force of compassion and care.

After moving to Joliet, Illinois, Ethel continued to be an active member of her community, particularly within the Holy Family parish. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and her purpose. She participated in the church choir and was active in the Catholic Council of Women. The year that she was president, she was awarded by the archdiocese "Catholic Woman of the Year".

Ethel's interests were a reflection of her love for the simple beauties in life. She had a passion for finding antiques, each piece telling a story of the past that she treasured. Her garden was her sanctuary, filled with the vibrant colors and fragrances of roses and peonies that she nurtured with as much care as she did her relationships. Ethel also found joy in entertaining family and friends. Her home was always a welcoming place filled with laughter and warmth no matter who crossed the doorway.

Ethel's legacy is one of selfless service and enduring kindness. Her friendly nature made her a beloved figure in her community and beyond. Whether she was sharing her knowledge with students or helping those in need through the Red Cross, Ethel embodied a spirit of generosity that knew no bounds.

As we remember Ethel, we are reminded of the words of Mother Teresa, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Ethel lived by this maxim, doing small things with great love every day of her life, making a profound impact on those around her.

We bid farewell to a remarkable woman whose light shone brightly in the lives of many. Ethel's unwavering faith and boundless generosity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished and honored by her family, friends, and all the lives she touched.

Ethel Josephine Villachua Abelido's story does not end with her passing, for her spirit lives on in the hearts of her loved ones and the countless individuals she helped throughout her life. As we celebrate her journey on earth, we take solace in knowing that her legacy of love, education, and service will endure for generations to come.
