John N. Tomaras Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, August 1, 2022. Survived by his children, Tina (Matthew) Brown and John Tomaras II; his grandchildren, Geno (Sarah) Sanchez, Patrick Sanchez, Jacob (Ashley Keene) Sanchez, Neil Sanchez, Jesse Tomaras, and Jenna Tomaras; his great grandchildren, Liam, Lily, Mason, Owen, Jack, Ben, and Derek. Numerous nieces and nephews in Greece also survive. Preceded in death by longtime partner of 26 years, Paulette Serra; son, Neil Tomaras; parents, Neilos (Stamatina) Tomaras; brother, George Tamaras and his sister, Maria Tomaras. John was born in Greece on February 4, 1933. He served in the Greek Navy from October 1955 to December 1957. John moved to the United States in 1964 and proudly became an American citizen in 1984. John loved to cook, working as a chef and host at several local restaurants. He partnered with family to own and operate the Sherwood Inn II in Joliet. Most of all John loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services for John will be held on Friday, August 5, 2022, at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 102 N. Broadway St., Joliet. Visitation will be held at church from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
