Lois L. Steinhoff (Bush/Bartolomei)
Lois Larkin Steinhoff, age 90, formerly of Joliet, IL, passed away on November 14, 2019. She was born the only child of Brigadier General Carl A. F. Steinhoff, MD and Anora Lois (Larkin) Steinhoff on September 5, 1929 in Miller, IN.
Her early years were spent in Sausalito, CA where her father was stationed at the Presidio, returning home to Chicago just prior to her mother's death in 1944. She graduated from William Wirt High School in Miller, IN in 1947. She went on to study English at Carthage College in Carthage, IL.
Lois worked for Selective Service where she helped to draft Doctors for the Army. Lois met H. Arthur Bush at a Military function organized by Selective Service. They married in December of 1955, living in Chicago until moving to Joliet in September of 1958, where they raised their two children, Caryl and Carl. Lois enjoyed gardening, swimming, family times and her Chicago Cubs! She was the neighborhood Matriarch, "Mom" to all, "Mrs. B", the one we all came to with our boo-boos for the never ending Lemon Drops, her ever present remedy for all our hurts. Even when her kids were in High School their house was the one their friends flocked to for the fun times, card games and "special" ping-pong games because of Mrs. Bush!
Lois was a member of First Presbyterian Church Women's Club and Bowling League, Pershing School PTA President and Board Member, a medical billing assistant and coder for her father from the mid '60's through 1984 when her father retired from his medical practice at the age of 89.
During the late 70's Lois traveled with her children and father, helping to put them through College after her divorce in 1976.
Lois continued work as a medical billing specialist for the next 12 years. During that time she reconnected with Caesar Bartolomei at her 50th Birthday party. They married in 1985 remaining in Joliet. The two enjoyed retirement, playing cards with friends, travel and time with family, especially their grandchildren. They were together for 13 years.
Lois moved to Bolingbrook, helping with the Senior Services Center and spending as much free time as she could with her daughter's family including two of her grandchildren. Lois still enjoyed travel, spending time with friends, playing cards, reading, shopping and of course watching her Chicago Cubs!
Preceded in death by her parents Brigadier General Carl A. F. Steinhoff MD and Anora Lois (Larkin) Steinhoff, her former husbands, H. Arthur Bush (father of her children) and Caesar Bartolomei.
Survived by her daughter, Caryl L (David J) Hayes of Plainfield, IL, her son, Carl A. (Barbara) Steinhoff II, of Ft. Myers, FL, bonus daughters MaryAnn (William) Jay, Suzette C. (Lee) Wilson and Patricia Andrews. Three grandchildren, Caitlyn (Jared) Elwart, Trey Steinhoff and Daniel J. Hayes and one great granddaughter, Quinnlyn Elwart.
Lois had a beautiful smile, she was a woman with a heart of gold, she had a love for life, she believed in everyone, her humor and compassion will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched. Lois made the world a better place just by being here.
