Patricia "Pat" Cahill passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2021 in the arms of her loving husband of 22 years, Peter, and her daughter, Christine. She was 81 years young and a Will County area resident for most of her life.
Pat was born on November 22, 1939 in Springfield, Illinois to Earl and Cecile Pumphrey. She was the oldest of five children, with two sisters and two brothers. When Pat was a young girl, the family moved to Plainfield, Illinois, where she attended Plainfield schools and was a popular and excellent student. She maintained close friendships with many classmates throughout her life.
Pat worked at Illinois Bell and it was during this time that she met and married Dick Jungels in 1959. The two of them raised a family of three children- their son, Craig, and daughters Christine and Jennifer- in Joliet. Pat was a homemaker and took great pride in creating a home for her family filled with music, traditions, and lots of love. She was an avid gardener and decorator and was no stranger to Charlie Club or area tennis courts and golf courses once she discovered her athletic abilities. She went on to enjoy weightlifting and especially racquetball, where she competed in local tournaments over the years. She meticulously kept the books for the family painting business and later obtained her real estate license. She was employed by both Spring Realty and Realty Executives. She later worked in retail and also at Route 66 Raceway in customer service, where her shining personality was showcased. She was a volunteer for Hospice and loved lending an empathetic ear to those who were suffering. She and Dick also traveled to exotic locations including Mexico and Hawaii, and they enjoyed camping with their family at Coal City Area Club and other places throughout the United States. They divorced after 34 years of marriage.
On September 16, 2000, Pat married Peter Cahill and the two of them have enjoyed life together for the past 22 years. They met five years prior at the Rustic in Wilmington, doing what they both loved most...listening to live music. They found a love that just "flowed", never having had an argument in all their years together. Their shared love of family, travel, motorcycle events, concerts and music, and also quiet days at home in Peotone, forged a rare and unbreakable bond. They enjoyed Sturgis, the Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota, yearly trips to Indy 500, St. Augustine, the Allman Brother's Museum in Macon, along with countless
weekend and camping trips throughout the United States. Pat's love of the open road,
especially at the wheel of her prized red Avenger, was one of her many joys in life.
Beautiful- inside and out- a true lady- Pat's clean living and active lifestyle contributed to her health and youthful nature throughout her life. Pat was one of the most positive people you would ever meet, always seeing the bright side of any situation and offering help and support to all those in need of a caring shoulder. Pat accepted and loved all people and never knew an enemy in all her 81 years. She was best known for her bright smile, a constant on her beautiful face, and people were drawn to her unmistakable light. Her gentle strength and unwavering faith were a guiding example to many. Pat was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-
grandmother, "surrogate" mother and friend to many, caregiver, 4- time cancer survivor (which led to a life-changing spiritual awakening), and a music lover who passed that passion on to her children. She touched many lives and leaves us better for having known and loved her.
Pat is survived by her husband, Peter, sister Jacqueline Drick, brother James Pumphrey, son Craig (Marsha) Jungels, daughter Christine Helin, and sons-in-law George (Biff) Helin and Steven Colnar. She was blessed with eight grandchildren (Justin, Emily, and Jacob Helin; Dylan, Mason, and Brandeline Jungels; Gabe and Gavin Colnar; and one great-grandchild, Mia Jungels). She also leaves sisters-in-law Amelia and Stephanie Cahill, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents Cecile and Earl Pumphrey, sister Suzanne (Gene) Cassani, brother Michael (Elaine) Pumphrey, and precious daughter, Jennifer Jungels Colnar.
