Obituary

Rudolph ("Rudy") C. Hufnagl, age 92, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

Survived by his children, Carol Hufnagl, Janice (Nancy Garetson) Hufnagl, Nancy (Jim) Wieder, and Peter (Jarrie Holt) Hufnagl; grandchildren, Olivia (Dan) Olson, Jimmy (Christine) Wieder, Rob Hecht, and Sarah Jayne Hecht; great-grandchildren, Logan, and Mason; and son-in-law, Juerg Roffler. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene Hufnagl; son, Marc Hufnagl; parents, George and Maria Hufnagl and his siblings, George Hufnagl, Richard Hufnagl, Edward Hufnagl, Gertrude Early, Paul Hufnagl, and Judith Anderson.

Rudy was born on June 23, 1932, to George and Maria and grew up on Chicago's north side. He attended Lane Tech High School until he turned 16 years old when he went to work full-time as a baker in his dad's bakery business located in the West Pullman neighborhood. When his father passed away suddenly in 1954, Rudy took over his father's West Pullman Bakery business. In 1962, Rudy purchased his own bakery located on Michigan Avenue in Roseland. Rudy worked hard and built a successful business, Hufnagl's Bakery, that was well known for its delicious and delectable full line of baked goods and wedding cakes. In 1975, Rudy sold the Roseland building and opened bakery locations in Chicago Heights and Glenwood (eventually keeping just the latter location) which were also highly successful. Rudy sold his bakery business in 1990 and worked for Klepper's Bakery in Tinley Park until his retirement in 1994. During his retirement, Rudy had a passion for woodworking and especially loved making beautiful rocking horses that he graciously gifted to children in the family.

In November 1950, Rudy married the absolute love of his life, Arlene Adams, and they had five wonderful children between 1951 and 1972 (surprise!). Rudy and Arlene enjoyed an enduring, loving marriage and remained totally devoted to each other until Arlene's passing in April 2023. Rudy missed his wife terribly and couldn't wait to be reunited with her once again.

Everyone - family and friends alike - loved Rudy for his impeccable character, gentleness, big heart, kindness, unconditional love and wonderful sense of humor. Family was all that ever mattered to Rudy. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched but Rudy will live forever in our memories and in our hearts.

Per Rudy's wishes cremation rites have been accorded.
