Obituary

William Yumich, age 70, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Survived by his children, Samantha (Zach) Florey and Seth Yumich; granddaughter, Natalee Curry and his sister, Brigitte Montgomery. Many dear friends also survive. Preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Yumich. Bill lived life on his own terms and was content throughout. He wanted not, he asked for nothing. He just did his own thing with most of those things involving sports. Topping that list most recently would be pumping some iron with his daughter Samantha at the former Charlie Club. When outside the gym he enjoyed jogging the neighborhood to "do some road work" followed by "a good little meal". Those -isms and a dry sense of humor represented his most endearing qualities. His love for sports galvanized during the much heralded 1968-69 Joliet West football seasons where the team went undefeated for 22 games straight, many of those teammates being his friends to the end. He experienced another run of success as the 3rd baseman of the 1974 softball team that won the City Tournament Championship. Later as a spectator, he enjoyed watching his granddaughter Natalee achieve success in softball eventually securing herself a scholarship to Spring Hill College in Alabama, a feat he was very proud of. All those years of watching and playing sports led to perhaps his greatest achievement, an encyclopedic knowledge of sports information. A skill Seth would frequently test him on. What's the name of India's most popular sport? No idea, but he did. Who won the Pro Bowling National Championship in 1994? Why he would know that I'll never understand, but he did, and his name was Dale Treber. He will be missed by many. Till we see you again.
